Women are Heroes : Un projet, un livre, un film
Ma première rencontre avec le travail de JR a eu lieu en 2007, à Paris, sa ville. J’ai photographié… une photo, dans la rue, sans en connaître ni le sens ni la cause, elle me parlait, c’est tout.

Plus tard, des reportages au sujet du projet Face2Face sont apparus dans les médias. Puis il y a eu « Women are Heroes » et maintenant « InsideOut ». L’engagement, l’humanisme, l’interactivité, la photographie et le street art sont les armes de JR, le photograffeur. Même si les médias abondent d’infos au sujet de l’artiste et de son œuvre, je voulais donner un espace de plus à sa création militante et participative.

Toutes les associations, ONG, structures d’éducation permanente devraient connaître le travail de JR et en prendre de la graine, voire y participer. Car si ses photos monumentales ornent aussi  les galeries, jusqu’à la Tate de Londres, la démarche de JR soutient des combats humains, de façon percutante et créative. Résumons ici deux projets qui me tiennent à cœur : « Women are Heroes » et « InsideOut ».

« Women are Heroes » dévoile au monde un hommage sans bornes de JR aux femmes fortes et dignes pour qui la vie est un combat au quotidien dans un environnement hostile. Elles vivent dans une favela de Rio, dans une zone de conflit en Afrique ou en Inde.  JR et ses équipes sont partis aux quatre coins du monde pour les photographier, les filmer et les interviewer. Elles sont attachantes et belles de courage, de dignité et souvent d’humour. Leurs paroles sont universelles. Les photos de JR sont magnifiques : des portraits monumentaux ont été collés dans les villes industrialisées de Paris à Bruxelles en passant par Londres. Le monde a découvert ces femmes, étalées sur les murs et les écrans. « Women are Heroes » est devenu un film et un bouquin, tous deux disponibles au grand public. Autant de moyen d’attirer l’attention sur la condition féminine dans les zones hostiles du monde, là où elles sont les plus exposées aux violences et à la pauvreté.
Certains et curieusement certaines (commentaires entendus lors d’une projection) ont qualifié le film de suite de ‘clichés’ misérabilistes.  Comment est-ce possible de nier des évidences et dénigrer un travail de sensibilisation aussi réussi ? En tout cas, je milite pour que « Women are Heroes » soit abondamment programmé et qu’il soit disponible au plus grand nombre.

« InsideOut » progresse dans la même veine. A l’échelle mondiale, les individus et les groupes sont invités à se faire photographier. Ensuite, un grand poster ‘façon JR’ est produit via le site du projet et est envoyé aux participants qui ont un engagement : le diffuser au  grand public. On partage ainsi visuellement l’existence d’anonymes qui font la vie d’un quartier, d’une société, d’une ville… d’un monde. Magnifique !

Women are Heroes : A project, a book, a film
My first encounter with the work of JR happened in 2007 in Paris, his city. … I just shot a photo in the street, without knowing its meaning or cause; the picture spoke to me, that’s all. Later reports on the Face2Face project appeared in the media. Then there was « Women Are Heroes » and now « InsideOut ». Commitment, humanism, interactivity, photography and street art are the weapons of JR, the “photograffeur”. Although the media are full of information about the artist and his work, I wanted to give my humble space to his great work.
All associations, NGOs, ongoing education structures should be aware of the work of JR use it or even participate. For besides the galleries display of JR monumental pictures, such as at the London Tate Modern, his work powerfully fights for human rights, peace and humanity.Let’s summarized this with two of JR projects that are close to my heart: « Women Are Heroes » and « InsideOut ». »Women Are Heroes » shouts to the world a fantastic tribute from JR to strong and worthy women for whom life is a daily struggle in a hostile environment. They live in a Rio favela, or in a conflict area in Africa or in a poor Indian neighborhood. JR and his teams have gone around the world to photograph them, film them and interview them. They are endearing and beautiful, fulfill their day to day life with courage and dignity with a sparkle humour . Their words are universal. The photos are beautiful  The monumental portraits taken of these encounters were pasted in the industrialized cities from Paris to Brussels via London. The world has discovered these women like that, spread over walls and screens as « Women Are Heroes » became a film and book, both available to the public, as a means of drawing attention to the condition of Women in hostile areas of the world where they are most exposed to violence and poverty.
Some comments about the film just irritated me, calling it (and I heard that at a preview) ‘clichés’ about women and misery. How is it possible to deny the obvious and despise such an efficient and interesting work? Anyway, I campaign for « Women Are Heroes » being programmed widely for all audiences and for the book to be available in every town library.
The « InsideOut » project spreads in the same vein. Individuals and groups are invited to be photographed, send the picture on the project site where a large poster ‘JR type’ is produced and sent to participants who have a commitment: sharing the poster with the people in a public space. We all then get aware of anonymous involved in the life of a neighbourhood, an association, a company, a city … the world.
